Different apartment

Well, I have spoken to the author of the video I posted below. It seems that he has renewed his post, so it is not his position that I will be replacing. There is another ALT (JET English teacher) in the area who is leaving after this year, so I will be replacing him or her. Well, hopefully the video gives you an idea of the area, and possibly of what the apartment might look like.

All for now.

Graduation and PLACEMENT!

I am now a recent graduate of Denison University! Go class of 2010!

I have also received an E-mail from JET with my placement! I am going to be sent to Fuefuki-shi (Fuefuki-city) in Yamanashi-ken (Yamanashi Prefecture)! I have found a YouTube video of the person who is living there now, so you can click the link below to view it! I may or may not be living in the same apartment as him, but maybe it'll give you an idea of the area. It is only about 2 hours from Tokyo by train, so if anyone came to visit me it wouldn't be too far to visit the city! Even if I wanted to see my old family in Saitama, it would be doable. Expensive, but doable.

Below is the YouTube video:

Below is the map of the area on Google Maps...

Also, I have received a few booklets from JET in the mail. One is for people who are just learning Japanese, one is about health insurance, and one includes the HOW TO's and WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT JAPAN handbook. I'll be reading a little bit at a time, and going through the Japanese book to see how much of it I already know. I have come across a few vocabulary words I don't know, so it'll at least be useful for that.

I do not yet know anything about what age group I'll be teaching, what I'll need to buy for the apartment, or anything else about who I'll be working with. Some time next month my predecessor and/or supervisor is supposed to be calling me to give me more information about specifics. One of my friends hasn't heard about her placement yet, so I got lucky to find out in the first round.

If you have any questions I'll do my best to answer them, but this is about all I know for now. (I don't know if I'll have to drive, if anyone else will be living in the area, how many schools I'll be working at, etc.)

Love you! Hopefully I can update you again soon.

Operation Move Out

I started packing up my room today. I'm doing it little by little so that I'm not completely overwhelmed at the end. I am having trouble letting go of some of my things, even though I know I won't be using them for a while, or ever again. For example, I have a calendar that I used all year in Japan for my planning and assignments. I won't use it again, but it feels like a journal and I am unable to let go of it. Another example, there are things I have in my room that would be great for an apartment down the line. I won't be able to take them to Japan with me because it is expensive to ship, but I think I'll be able to use them when I move back from Japan and find an apartment of my own. These things include coffee maker, mini christmas tree, coffee table, curtains, pillows, drawer set, etc. I think there will be places to store some things while I am away, but getting them home (or storing them until I leave) may also be a bit of an inconvenience. Or things that I have had for four years, but are still usable so I'm having trouble letting go of those as well! (Towels, dish rags, etc.) I'll figure it all out in the end. I suppose my biggest problem is just that I don't like spending money (in the future) on items that I still have in the present. I have decided to sell my bike (which is not in great condition anyway...) and my mini fridge to people who will still be at Denison next year.

Packing up my stuff has started to make the realization of leaving this home really sink in however. This may be the last time I call Ohio my home residence, and is also the last time I'll be in such a structured environment school wise. Graduate school is still school of course, but usually by that time people are not living on campus, or are only going to school part-time, or whatever. I wrote my last school paper last semester without even realizing it, and I took my last test of my Denison career yesterday. Some underclassman have probably already left campus who I will not say goodbye to, and it feels weird that to say goodbye to some will be so easy, and to others so difficult. I prefer easy goodbyes, but that's because the difficult ones obviously hurt. Well, this is a part of life after-all. I will have to say goodbye to Croton again in two months, and then I'll have to say goodbye to all my friends in Japan in a year or two as well. I suppose if I had stayed in Croton all my life, goodbyes wouldn't be as big a part of it, but I prefer to move around, meet new people, see new things, and goodbyes are just a part of all that!

It's funny how it can be simultaneously easy and hard...

Summer 2010

I am really excited about this coming summer! I'll start by going to West Virginia for a few days, and then when I go home some students from Denison will be in the NY area and spend some time in the city and at our house. Some of my plans for the summer include doing research about consulting, having a few meetings with consultants in the area for informational interviews, free (fun) reading/research, recording songs with a friend, and working for Trudy. I am really happy that I'll be able to continue working for her while I am at home and even abroad. I have really learned so much by working there! I will probably spend a good amount of time outside, in the library, and at the black cow while I'm at home for the two months. I will also hopefully get a chance to go through things to give away, and organize the attic a little bit so I can store things up there while I am away. I'll keep you updated with my projects!

Current projects:

Reading The Accidental Office Lady by Laura Kriska.
She is a Denison Alumni
(class of '87), and she worked for Honda in Tokyo right after graduation. I am in the early stages of reading the book now, but when I am done I will give you a mini synopsis. If an
yone is interested in reading about a foreigner working in Japan in the auto/business industry, you should take a look. So far, I am a little surprised about her rigidness and unwillingness to really adapt to Japanese society, but as I said, I will let you know more about it when I get further into the book. I am going to meet up with her in NY this summer to talk about
her experience and her job after returning to America after Japan. I'll let you know how that goes as well once we meet.

Writing my Arabic final. It is going to take me a while...

Writing thank you cards for teachers and family.

Going through my filing drawer of old records before I lug all of that home.

Account Exam

Well, everything around here seems to be going well!

I have my first final tomorrow. I am not looking forward to it, because I seem to be having a very difficult time motivating myself to study for it. It is only 2:30 now though, and I don't have any real plans between now and the exam so I can continue to sit and try to study. I do have class tomorrow morning, but that'll only be an hour or so.

My next exam is on Wednesday. Wish me luck!
