Since I am going to Japan to be an English Teacher, I need to think of material to bring with me about my home culture and language! Here are some things I'm thinking about bringing with me, because they are helpful when I taught in Shimane for a month. Please post new ideas as a comment! Here are the ideas I have so far...

Funny that you're asking this question - I have a few ideas. First of all, I have all this coll stuff from Putumayo Music Company. These are the guys who have all the cool "world music" CD's that you find @ Whole Foods, various coffee houses, etc. They have a program designed to introduce people to various cultures through music. I probably have several CD's in the serious and it could be used as a way to share our diverse culture. If the kids you're teaching are preschool/kindergarden, then I also have some companion materials I could send as well. I might also have some of the curriculum we used when I did diversity training in China. The language may be different, but we did some really cool games, exercises, discussions that might work for you as well. Let me know and I'll send some off. Uncle Dennis. P.S. Tell Ms. Noodles to write and say hi - I miss her too. :) Dennis
ReplyDeleteHi, Lana
ReplyDeleteFinally I have showed up!
Sorry I have been very busy so I could not reply timely. In fact Miho is teaching English in Japane and she buys some English leaning books at BJ's. She said they are loved very much. I wish Miho can reach you but her situation of now is really tough- now she is in grad school kind....:-(

Hey, believe it or not I might be doing an auction of signed Michael Jackson memorabilia in Japan and might need some local help - maybe in June. Can you hook me up with someone locally in Tokyo?
ReplyDeleteTake LOTS of pictures of yourself (at different ages), your family, your hometown, your pets, etc. People - especially students - will want to know about you. A LOT about you.
ReplyDeleteMy Favorite children's books are The Friendly Ladybug and Where the Wild Things Are. Friendly Ladybug seems perfect for your purposes.
ReplyDeleteMaps are good but the kids are gonna want to see pictures of the places you're teaching them about. Like Ohio's big corn fields or NYC or NY's forests/rivers/lakes.
Dennis: How can I get a copy of the CDs or a sound file through the computer? The music ideas sound great, and getting some insight on what you did in China also sounds really beneficial! (By the way, when did you go to China? You never told me about that!) If you could send some of the things to my e-mail or NY address that would be really great! I'll have two months over the summer to look everything over carefully before I go.
ReplyDeleteAbout the auction: I won't be GOING to Japan until July 24th. You said you'll be there in June, or do you just need contacts in June? I don't know anyone in the art business in Tokyo, but I do know people who live in the city and in the surrounding areas that I could get you in contact with. My host mother especially because she has her own teaching business, and she speaks English. What kind of contact are you looking for exactly? Someone to show you around? Housing? Business? Maybe you could e-mail me with more specifics and I'll see how I can help you. I also know an art consultant who I could work with in better serving you. ^_^ LanaKitcher@gmail.com

タンゲマン先生、and Casey- Thank you for your ideas! I had completely forgotten about taking pictures (and that was really helpful when I went to Shimane!) and I will look into the Ladybug book you mentioned. Taking pictures of things I take for granted (like Ohio's corn fields and places in my town) is something I hadn't thought about. Thanks ^_^
ReplyDeleteGO TEAM!
