Merry Christmas 2011 and Happy New Year 2012!

Hello!  Sorry for my recent absence.  End of the year grading, card sending and Christmas gifting has kept me behind!  Actually, I am going to South Korea tomorrow morning, and it will be at least another week or so before I actually post a real entry.  I just wanted to let you know that I'll be posting about my trip when I come back, and I hope you're looking forward to seeing some pictures and hearing about it!

I also wanted to wish everyone a
MERRY CHRISTMAS
and a
HAPPY NEW YEAR
before I left.

Happy holidays, and take care during the cold winter season!  If you're in the southern hemisphere, then I hope you're enjoying the summer!  Any surfing Santas?

Sincerely,

Lana

Holiday Volunteering & Fundraising, No Impact Project

It's been a while since I've done any direct volunteering with the No Impact Project, but here is an update about the December Give Back Day.   They're going to have an awesome "make your own gifts from recycled materials" workshop and a White Elephant Gift Swap this Sunday!  Check out the event and RSVP on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/events/154755097958150/.

Since I'm not in NY yet I won't be able to attend myself, but I'm looking forward to joining in on many of these events in person next year!  If you're interested in helping out the No Impact Project financially, they are also hosting an Alternative Gift Auction held online at http://www.ebay.com/sch/noimpactproject/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=25&_trksid=p3686 (Also a facebook event here: http://www.facebook.com/events/333738063308923/) and Holiday Fundraising Party in NYC http://noimpactholidayparty.eventbrite.com/ (facebook event here: http://www.facebook.com/events/193816130700480/)

Enjoy your No Impact holiday season!

Sincerely,

Lana Kitcher

Finances

I've gotten a lot better at my personal financial bookkeeping over the years, and now I know exactly how much I'm spending and what exactly my money is being spent on.  For some categories I am surprised that I've spent so little, and for others I can't believe I've spent so much!  For all of 2011 minus December, here are a few examples of my spending habits.

For 2011 I have spent approximately:
$109.00 on clothes (this is less than some people spend on clothes in one trip to the mall!)
$1,038.00 on dining out (here I've realized that I need to cut back and save in 2012)
$168.00 on electricity bills (can you believe this is almost a whole year's worth!?)
$492.00 on internet bills (I spend more on the internet than on electricity?)
$3,246 on rent (some people spend this much on rent a month!)

Of course there are other bills and expenses, but this is just a glimpse at how things added up.  I think that I need to be a little more mindful of my entertainment and dining-out bills after seeing how they add up in the long term, and be grateful that my main utilities and rent are so low.

If you're interested in being financially aware, I'd be more than happy to send you templates of my financial spreadsheets.  They help me keep track of earnings, spending, and savings.  If you are in need of budgeting help, these could be great tools to help you get started!

Back to work tomorrow.
